move cd review

November 2005

You can always count on Unity Sounds to have the latest tunes on their infamous dancehall mix cd’s which have been steadily produced in the Unity camp for over 10 years.  Since their move from Atlanta, Unity Sounds has spread out to form factions in Florida and Japan and are well on their way to taking over the sound world from their new bases of operations.  Their mixed CD’s are so far ahead of the pack that you can buy the latest one in the fall and still hear the tunes on it being played in the club the following spring.  You may not even hear the same tunes on the radio until the following year or later, being introduced to the general public who’s not in the know as ‘new’ songs.

The latest CD by Unity Sounds, entitled “THE MOVE” is on exception.  My personal favorite CD’s of all time start out easy and calm and culminate in an aural orgasm of pure bashment style that makes it impossible to listen and stay still.  This is the format of Unity’s prior dancehall mix, the double CD superstar, “SPRINGTIME MIX” –CD1 following the format exceptionally.  Move is following in those same tracks, starting out with some nice and easy singing tunes that slowly bounce along like Natural Black’s catchy “Far from reality” and Jah Cure’s melodious “Love Is’’, all of which are on the “SEASONS” riddim which bounces enough to make you sway to the beat, but stays calm enough to let you relax and sing along.

For those of you who like a little crossover in your mix you can hear “One Thing” the R&B hit by Amerie remixed on the PALEAN riddim exlusively by Unity Sounds.  The PALEAN riddim is another nice and easy riddim with some electronic sounds vaguely reminiscent of the hit BOOKSHELF riddim which tore up the dancehalls for years to come beginning in 1998.

The HELLO MOTO riddim is the most talked about riddim in the dancehall of late.  There are 6 tracks on The MOVE cd featuring the electronic sounding HELLO MOTO riddim, the best of which in my opinion is Vybez Kartel’s “HELLO MOTO”, “How yuh fi have a gal if you no have a phone?” Vybez asks in this lighthearted tune which is a welcome change from Vbyez common repotoire of guns and girls.

The Cd’s namesake riddim THE MOVE comes in when the cd has reached a boiling point.  Vybez Kartel takes the crown again for this one as out of the 7 tracks on the riddim I feel his “The Zone” is the best.

The hype mode continues through the remainder of the CD with standout tunes being BEENIE MAN’s “EXODUS” on the Justice riddim, “Emergency” by Vybez Kartel “Emergency, things tough around here” he sings of Jamaica’s current state over the perfectly fitting SIREN riddim.

*Every CD has that one track you immediately memorize the number of, the one where you can’t help yourself from pressing ‘repeat’ and the REPLAY TRACK is what we call it here.  The SKIP TRACK is just what it sounds like.  The track where you used to hit FAST FORWARD on back in the tape days and would hope you didn’t stop it too early.  Thank goodness for CD’s
