Red Room and Addis Abeba
(Feb. 28-AKA The Elephant Man Show that never was....)
review and pics by montana
10:30pm:
lisa's on the phone from the wild hare, "no, there's no line in front of the
cubby bear." she told me, when i called with carmen in the car on the way to
the elephant man show early to beat the crowd.

10:45pm: lisa's on the phone from cubby bear (a
lot of noise in the background),"yes, there's a long line out here!" so, we
rush to get down addison to get into the show.

10:50pm lisa's on the phone again, "what?
it's cancelled?!" lots of noise in the background... we pull up to see
people looking confused and walking away.

we decide to park anyway and at least enjoy the
night for what it was worth. we had to walk up to the cubby bear just to
get the final word. we saw the tour bus outside and knew we had been
minutes away from a great show, but no such luck. teejay was spotted
outside of the back door to the cubby bear and we decided to go inside and
take a look and get the scoop just as the band's equipment was being
disassembled and carried out to the tour bus.

the cubby bear was decorated in pure elephant
man paraphanalia. posters and cards on every pole. we tried to
make the best of the night as i tucked my elephant man bandana in my pocket
and headed across the street to adis abeba.
inside adis abeba the mood was mixed as the dj
played some old bob marley and some early warm tunes. you could tell
by the faces who was coming from the failed show across the street and who
didn't have a clue about what just went on. we danced and made the
best of it and when the crowd got too thick for a decent solo dance ( around
1:45am) we headed south to red room.

red room was nice and hot and steamy (can they get at least ONE more of
those big fans up in there, please!) as usual and we did our thing and
danced until our (well, mine at least) hair sweated into a jheri curl
looking style. big up to all the selectors for making a disappointment
turn into a good time still.
