Chicago is known worldwide as a city reborn from the ashes of the Great Chicago Fire. Last Saturday was the second coming of ....More Fire! Congress Promotions presented Still Blazing 2001. The show was promoted with a top billing of Coco Tea , Louie Culture and the fire man himself, Capleton.

Chicagoreggae.com arrived at  Union Hall around  2:00am. Union hall was packed to the ceiling.  On stage, a new artist, Military Man was going through a warm up for the crowd. Backed by the Prophecy band, Military Man  received quite a few forwards from the crowd. Keep an eye out for this artist. He had a good command of his lyrics and seemed very comfortable in front of  the audience .

Coco Tea began his set of powerful tunes at 2:30 am. One of Jamaica's most respected singers, Coco Tea, began to belt out classic tunes from way back.  Coco Tea rocked the crowd with “Good Life”, “She Loves Me Now” and the classic “ Holy Mt. Zion”.  Coco Tea received the crowds full attention as he belted out the old favorite, “Rikers Island”. Coco Tea  received forwards for his entire set Saturday evening and clearly showed he’s still on top of his game.

Everyone settled down for a few minutes, following  the great performance by the legendary Coco Tea. The rest was short or brief at best. The Field Marshall arrived on stage to make a few announcements and quickly introduced  the next performer. The audience, was eagerly awaiting the arrival of Capleton.  We’re still waiting for answers on the absence of  Louie Culture, however, it really didn’t seem to bother the crowd as the “Prophet” stormed the stage.

Capleton shook the crowd with a  blazing command of “Jah Jah City”.  Followed by  a the ever growing list of hit tunes in his repertoire, “ Heathen Reign”,  the classic “ ”Tour”,  “Slew Dem” , “ Run the Place” and “More Prophet”. Capelton switched the show’s focus a bit and proclaimed, “I’m hunting to find a natural girl that is mine”.  The ladies took center stage as Fireman Dun the place with the dancehall favorite “Hunt You”. He kept the ladies moving with the pretty gal’s favorite,  “Good in her clothes”.

Capelton’s fire kept burning until 4:00am with hit, after hit! The highlight of the evening was Capelton’s revised version of “Stay Far From Trouble”. The Fireman had every lighter lit as he sang of repatriation, wages, politics, crime ...etc. The city was left with ashes and soot as the Fireman “burned Union Hall to the ground!”

here is another, new review on the same show, from chicagoreggae.com guest reporter issa:

Capelton – Chicago, IL – June 21, 2001 – reviewed by Issa Prophet

The night is hot and humid and Union Hall has people milling about.  Chicago has started the celebration of  His Imperial Majesty’s Earthday.  It’s midnight and we walk slowly to the door, the excitement growing as we draw near.   The Prophet is due to grace old ChiTown (pronounce ShyTown – nickname for Chicago) with his presence.  On the bill tonight is Louie Culture, Cocoa Tea and Capelton.

My small coconut purse get rifled through, the woman checks my body and even pushes on the wrap on my head (wrapped and appropriately dressed out of respect for the Bobo Brethren and Sistren).    Once we clear security we wade through a medium sized crowd to the performance area.  There is a wide range of people here - Bobos to Players, Dancehall Queens to Rootsdawtas.  Many nations are represented, it’s a beautiful sight.

The locals, Carl Brown and Devon Brown, start off the show around 12:30.  They always present well, but these fellows I can see almost every night.  I just want the real show to start.  I wait…..patiently.

There is a band change and you can feel the energy getting more intense.  The Prophecy Band starts out of the blocks strong.  They hit us with a Studio One lick.  People are starting to sway.

Jah Thunder comes out, he is a young DJ that seems to be getting groomed.  He has good stage presence, and some tough lyrics, but could tighten up his rhythm a little bit more.  Thanks to the men he is traveling with he is getting the opportunity to improve his timing and work on building a rapport with the audience.

Next up, Cocoa Tea.  Sweet, Sweet Cocoa Tea……..Jah know I love this man’s voice.  He pulls out a lot of his hits on this night.  Bust Outta Hell, Kingston Hot, Pose Up, I Lost My Sonia, Gotta Know Rastafari, I’m Going Home, Good Life, Rivers of Babylon  and Louisiana. The audience is singing with him.  They cheer at the start of each new song.  He leaves the stage and the audience is left wanting more.

I look around and the place is full!  Union Hall performance area is about the size of 3-4 basketball courts.  We are about 10 rows back from the front and in the center.  I cannot see the walls to either side of me or behind me.

SUDDENLY there is a flash of red, a streak moving across the stage.  It’s Capelton in full effect.  He has on a red linen suit on.  His legs and arms are flying everywhere.  His feet look like they are level with his head when he kicks his legs with knees bent.  FLAMES FLAMES everywhere.  People Jumping, Chanting and Hollering!  FLAMES FLAMES.  He does Rise Up, What Is Your Purpose and Jah Jah City.  Many songs are from his new CD ‘More Fire’.  He does one song about how women should NOT have a revolving door at their poom poom.  He also does some fire burn the gays. My head is spinning and there are FLAMES all around.  He plays for about one hour.

Encore – he rips it up – The people can’t get enough of him.  He does another BUNCH of songs.

Encore – FLAMES - ChiTown is still calling for Capelton.  He comes back out and does a serious DJ move and goes so fast I don’t understand a single word he said.

Encore – MORE FIRE – People are demanding Capelton to come out.  Still FULL of energy, Legs flying and arms moving.  His words  potent, his demeanor commanding.

ENCORE – Yes my friends you are reading this correctly.  CAPELTON HAS FOUR ENCORES IN CHITOWN!!!!!!  He comes across the stage fast and furious.  He’s jumping and running and STILL teaching the people what they are longing to learn.

Three hours after Jah Thunder set foot on the stage it’s over, Capelton finished his last song.   It’s a little after four o’clock in the morning.   The place is still filled with energy, the floor littered with lighters.

Capelton and his crew are consummate artists.  An example more musicians and entertainers really need to follow.

The Prophecy Band deserves a BIG UPS.  They played constantly, consistently and full of energy and spirit through the whole show.

Four Encores

The Prophet FULFILLS!
